Crawford Mack, the innovative Glaswegian songwriter, is set to release a thought-provoking single titled “Don’t Play The Victim” on May 15th. Known for his unique blend of personal introspection and political commentary, Mack’s work often traverses the boundaries of these two worlds.

In this new single, Mack confronts male dynamics by deconstructing the femme fatale trope that has long dominated narratives surrounding powerful women. He aims to dismantle the portrayal of such figures as mere antagonists in men’s lives. As Mack highlights, “This one started as a reckoning with the femme fatale trope; specifically the way it frames a powerful woman as the villain of an arrogant man’s story while quietly flattering the man even in his defeat.”

The song intricately weaves together a cast of male characters, revealing their complexities and the common patterns in their experiences. Tom faces harsh realities, Billy endures the perils of inflated self-worth, while Dan and Luke are portrayed less favorably. The repeated phrase, “Don’t play the victim,” actively turns the narrative around, challenging these men’s roles and portraying the deeper issues behind their grievances. As Mack states, “The femme fatale trope always frames the woman as the problem… the song is about what happens when a woman is simply categorically better than the men around her, and those men can’t process that without feeling victimised.”

Musically, “Don’t Play The Victim” mirrors its unyielding subject matter with a vigorous sound characterized by a driving riff crafted from eclectic guitar work, rhythmic elements derived from aerosol tins, and punctuated by high-energy cymbal work. Co-written and produced by Rory James and featuring Alex Reeves of Elbow on drums, the track promises a compelling auditory experience. Its accompanying music video, directed by Eilidh Loan, encapsulates the main character’s struggles as he revisits moments leading to his divorce, portrayed through striking visual metaphors and raw emotion.

Following his previous single, “Back From The Brink,” released on April 3rd, 2026, “Don’t Play The Victim” is part of Mack’s upcoming debut EP titled “Panic Attack.” The coupling of introspective lyrics with salient social critiques marks this release as an essential addition to contemporary music, encouraging listeners to reflect on complex gender dynamics. Fans can look forward to a meaningful exploration of these themes when the single drops on May 15th. Additional details regarding the artwork can be found here.
