Crawford Mack, a prominent songwriter from Glasgow, has released his impactful new single, “Back From The Brink.” This track is the second offering from his upcoming EP, “Panic Attack,” and addresses the deep questions surrounding humanity’s desire for divine assistance in tumultuous times. Through his music, Mack paints a vivid picture of moral dilemmas and faith amid modern chaos.
Musically, “Back From The Brink” contrasts lo-fi filtered folk elements with deeper sonic layers. It begins with a textured, warped soundscape that seamlessly transitions into a captivating ambience characterized by a distinct dark bass synth and rhythmically ticking, clock-like drums. The inspiration for the song emerged from a striking photograph of the Christ the Redeemer statue in San Salvador, which appears to grasp for the moon. From this poignant image, Mack channels the perspective of an individual questioning a higher power regarding the violence and corruption that have historically been wrought in the name of faith. The song adopts a tone of agnosticism—a heartfelt plea rather than a harsh indictment—inviting listeners to ponder profound existential queries. 
Co-produced by Jamie Evans and Rory James, “Back From The Brink” features drums played by Alex Reeves of Elbow and has been expertly mastered by Matt Colton at Metropolis Studios. The accompanying music video, filmed at the Asylum Chapel in Peckham, features a handmade replica of a stained glass window from Glasgow Cathedral, a piece originally installed by Mack’s five-times great-grandfather, David Kier. This visually stunning video symbolizes hope; it depicts light gradually diminishing from the stained glass panes, reflecting Mack’s yearning for persistence in humanity’s narrative.
In articulating his creative journey, Mack remarks, “I started writing this after seeing a photograph of the Christ the Redeemer statue in San Salvador… I wanted to ask why nobody’s intervening, while knowing that the question itself might be naive.” This sentiment lies at the heart of “Back From The Brink,” offering audiences a thoughtful reflection on life’s deeper inquiries.
