Inside Gordi’s ‘Like Plasticine’, a third album of change and care, with ‘Your Consolation Prize’ and features across the set.
‘Like Plasticine’ is an artist’s notebook turned into a vibrant record. Gordi’s third album arrives with a sense of grace, gathering songs written through seasons of change and wholehearted living. In recent weeks she toured Europe with Foster The People, appeared in the US at Lollapalooza and Hinterland Festival, and visited The Kelly Clarkson Show, CBS Mornings, and KEXP. With a brief return to Australia ahead of more travel, she places the album in listeners’ hands with an open heart.
“Today, as I finally set this album free, I am reminded of its beginning. Deep in the middle of the pandemic I began writing the songs that would make up ‘Like Plasticine’, wondering what the purpose of music was at all. I tried to stop thinking and just feel. When I look back on that time now, sitting in Phoenix Central Park surrounded by things I could make music with, I see ‘Like Plasticine’ arriving as though it was a fire hydrant erupting. Everything we try to contain comes out one way or another. So when you listen to this record, un-contain yourself, stop thinking, and just feel. – Gordi”
Across 12 tracks, Gordi reflects on coming out and thoughtfully reshaping her future, while also drawing from her experience as a doctor during the pandemic. The writing embraces the beauty of honest emotion, the ache that accompanies change, and the way love helps make meaning of it all.
A key moment arrives with ‘Your Consolation Prize’. Co produced by Brad Cook, known for work with Snail Mail, Jensen McRae, and Bon Iver, the song carries the shimmer of classic synth pop. Drum machines pulse beneath a soft choir, as Gordi considers the truth that some young queer people may still face qualifiers placed upon their lives, even as acceptance grows.
Elsewhere, listeners will find ‘Peripheral Lover’, ‘Cutting Room Floor’, ‘PVC Divide’ featuring Anaïs Mitchell, and ‘Lunch At Dune’. ‘Like Plasticine’ is gentle and powerful at once, a creative home where listeners are invited to stop thinking, and just feel.
