Skegss preview EP Top Heavy with “State of Hawaii,” a trumpet-laced track inspired by Cuban rhythms and Hawaiian vibes.

Australian surf-rockers Skegss embrace a sun-soaked sound on “State of Hawaii,” the latest single from their upcoming EP Top Heavy, due June 27 via Loma Vista Recordings. This new track explores uncharted territory for the band, fusing bossa nova beats with trumpet, Spanish vocals, and their signature charm.

“We had a bit of fun with this song in the studio where we tried a few different versions,” shares Benny Reed. “Then we thought it would be fun to go a little Latin or Cuban… We got some congas in there and trumpet for the first time, as well as some Spanish vocals.”

The song paints a vivid picture of tropical escape and captures that feeling through relaxed instrumentation and warm production. It’s accompanied by a tour-filmed video from Kale Neville, visually anchoring the song in Skegss’ global travels.

“State of Hawaii” follows the band’s recent single “So Excited” and continues the creative momentum behind Top Heavy. After a 20-date North American tour, Skegss are currently concluding their UK/EU leg with sold-out shows in London, Paris, and Glasgow.

They’re set to launch their biggest Australian tour to date next month, including a special placement in the 2025 VIVID program. As always, Skegss prove their ability to grow sonically while maintaining the playful, introspective vibe fans love.
