With a poetic voice and tranquil sound, UMI’s ‘people stories’ explores ego, love, healing, and what makes us human.
Rising R&B voice UMI opens a new chapter with the release of her debut album people stories, a lush and intimate offering released via Epic Records. Known for her serene vocals and genre-fluid compositions, UMI steps forward as a narrator not just of her own life, but of the interconnected human experience.
The album’s centerpiece, “RIGHT WRONG,” captures the essence of her message. Guided by minimal production and a melodic softness, the track is steeped in emotion and self-awareness. “This song was freestyle written about a conversation between me and my higher self inspired by my mom,” UMI says. “She guides me without judgement… ‘RIGHT WRONG’ is a reminder to follow the heart & to lean on those you love.” The accompanying video recalls early 2000s music video storytelling, visually connecting nostalgia with present-day soul.
From start to finish, people stories creates a space for stillness and emotional discovery. Drawing from the lives of fans, family, and herself, UMI’s lyrics reflect universal struggles: letting go of ego, finding truth in silence, and trusting the inner voice. The album also includes voice clips from her therapist, further anchoring it in themes of reflection and healing.
UMI explains, “I wanted to be the storyteller, the vessel to express everyone’s stories… I was reminded of how colorful the human experience is.”
Blending R&B with elements of folk, pop, and soul, people stories captures the complexity of life with peaceful clarity. It’s not only a debut; it’s a declaration of identity and empathy—proof that when we share honestly, we all find pieces of ourselves in each other.
