Sophia Thakur Sophia Thakur

Vogue and BBC-acclaimed poet launches her music career with a powerful first single.

Splitting her time between the UK and US in recent years, it was his period of transition and flux which became the catalyst for the track, as she felt inspired to step out of her comfort zone and embrace a new challenge in a different artistic space.

Leaning into her love of alt-soul and indie R&B, ‘My City’ showcases not only her beautifully crafted lyrics but her soft and inviting vocal performance. Sophia, alongside long time collaborator Pat Cunningham have delivered a stripped back, vocal-led track which feels as intimate as the message is personal. Sophia’s aim is to make music you want to listen to at sunset, and ‘My City’ feels like the perfect soundtrack to those beautiful moments of contemplation.

“This song was written during a time of huge change for me.” She says. “I felt a hunger for more, for different things. I felt like I needed to live under new skies, be loved in different ways, be surrounded by things that felt harmonious to the person I was becoming, not just the person I’d been.”

“My City is the most honest I’ve gotten in a while. It is about everything I feel right now, transitioning from poetry into music, from one great love into another. From the second I wrote it, I knew I loved how honest it was. Not just the message but even the bit of poetry in the middle. I think it’s a perfect entry into the world of music I’ve been living in lately.”

While ‘My City’ marks the beginning of her solo music journey, she has already performed on tracks with artists such as Jacob Banks, Nao, Tiana Major9, and Limoblaze. In the live arena Sophia has grown a cult following from her magical live performance experiences, selling out her headline shows at The Jazz Cafe, Bush Hall, Omeara, and The Lower Third, whilst performing on world-renowned stages including Glastonbury, Abbey Road StudiosThe Royal Albert HallThe Rockefeller CenterTEDx (twice) and Sky Arts TV. Blending her soft yet powerful poetry with jazz, neo-soul, and afrobeats, Sophia masterfully reflects our stories back to us, evoking empathy and compassion.

‘My City’ is the first in a series of singles, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for an artist already shaping the cultural landscape of storytelling and music with a message.
