Olly Alexander has announced the release of his highly anticipated solo album Polari, set to arrive on February 7, 2025, via Polydor Records. The announcement comes alongside the release of ‘Cupid’s Bow,’ the album’s first single, which offers listeners a glimpse into the themes explored throughout the project.
Polari takes its name from a coded slang language used within LGBTQ+ communities as a form of secret communication. For Olly, the concept resonates deeply—not only as a historical reference but as part of his own personal journey. His role in the series It’s A Sin made these themes even more relevant, prompting him to reflect on self-expression and the search for identity.
‘Cupid’s Bow,’ created in collaboration with Danny L Harle, reflects a love for underground club sounds, blending bold electronic beats with thoughtful lyrics. The song explores themes of intimacy, identity, and desire, capturing both the excitement and vulnerability of modern love. Olly’s fascination with queer culture, both past and present, is woven into the track, which feels as much a celebration of subculture as it does a personal reflection on connection. 
Having spent ten years as the lead of Years & Years, Polari represents Olly’s first solo project, allowing him the creative freedom to fully explore his artistic vision. His collaboration with Danny L Harle draws on the experimental sounds of the 80s, blending avant-garde pop with modern production techniques.
The album also incorporates a bold visual element, with Olly taking inspiration from filmmaker Derek Jarman. Beyond the music, he has written a playful, surreal short play to accompany the album’s release. Through its mixture of storytelling, music, and visual art, Polari explores the timeless human need to belong and connect.
