“Carried Away” introduces Nell Mescal’s next project, produced by Philip Weinrobe.
Nell Mescal delivers her most revealing single yet with “Carried Away,” the first release since her signing to Atlantic Records. The song was written and recorded in Brooklyn with producer Philip Weinrobe and is accompanied by a music video available now.
The track focuses on emotional dissonance within a romantic connection. “It’s a song about asking for reassurance from someone you’re in a tumultuous relationship with and being disappointed by their answer,” Nell explains. “Instead of saying they love you back, they say they just got carried away.”
Weinrobe’s production adds dimension to the vulnerability at the heart of the song. “The demo of this vs the finished product is so different and it was so exciting to create in the studio,” Nell recalls. “I played it with just me and a guitar for the band and after playing it once everyone joined in and it immediately became clear the direction we were headed in.
Philip had some amazing ideas. We thought about doing a lyric change in the second pre chorus and he had the entire band play the same section over and over again while I wrote as quickly as possible…and it really elevated the song.”
Following the success of her EP and sold-out acoustic tour, Nell’s stage presence continues to grow. She recently played TRNSMT and Somerset House, and upcoming sets include Reading & Leeds and Newcastle’s Come Together Festival. A large-scale tour for 2025 is also in the pipeline.
