Mariah Carey is celebrating 30 years of her holiday classic, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” in collaboration with Vevo for a special Footnotes episode. This behind-the-scenes feature highlights the making of the “Make My Wish Come True Edition” video, revisiting the creative vision and festive spirit behind one of the most successful Christmas songs in history.
Directed by Joseph Kahn, the video draws inspiration from Busby Berkeley’s iconic choreography and the elegance of Hollywood’s golden age musicals. Mariah reflects on the challenges of participating in the elaborate dance sequences, sharing that dancing is not her strong suit. The Busby Berkeley-inspired scene, featuring synchronized dancers on platforms, required hours of meticulous filming from various angles to achieve its visual brilliance.
The video includes several notable cameos. Mykal-Michelle Harris, who portrays a young Mariah, was praised by Carey for embodying her childhood love of Christmas: “She represents little me and all the kids who love Christmas!” Carey’s twins, Monroe and Moroccan, also make joyful appearances, along with her dog, Cha Cha, continuing her tradition of featuring pets in her festive videos. Director Joseph Kahn’s daughter, Josie, adds a touch of magic, appearing as an angel popping out of a present. 
Celebrating 30 years, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” continues to make history. The single broke Billboard records in 2023, hitting #1 on the Hot 100 for the fifth consecutive year, and its videos have amassed over 1.5 billion views worldwide.
